A reliable backup plan protects you from accidental deletion, device failure, ransomware, and loss. Use the 3-2-1 rule as a practical starting point: keep three copies of important data, store them on two different types of media, and maintain one copy offsite or in a trusted cloud service. Separate operational files from archives so a corrupted folder does not take everything with it. Encrypt sensitive backups and protect the encryption keys with a strong, unique passphrase. Schedule automatic backups, but test restoration regularly; an untested backup may be incomplete or unreadable. Keep operating systems and backup software updated. For highly sensitive material, consider offline storage that is disconnected after each backup. Document where backups live and who can access them. Finally, remove obsolete copies according to a clear retention schedule. A simple plan you follow consistently is far better than an elaborate system you never verify.
